Don Norris

Donald Norris served eight years as a Drill Sergeant in the U.S. Army Reserve, with assignments at Fort Jackson, Fort Polk, Fort Bliss, and Fort Knox. He began his service after earning a BS in Engineering Mechanics from Virginia Tech in 1970 and working as a co-op student and development engineer at Black & Decker. He later completed an MBA at Virginia Tech and earned a Ph.D. from the University of Michigan in 1976.

He spent 12 years as a planning and institutional research officer at the University of Michigan, the University of Texas at Austin, and the University of Houston. He then moved to Northern Virginia to enter consulting, working with Advanced Technology (later PRC) and the M&H Group.

In 1991, Norris founded Strategic Initiatives, Inc. Over the next 32 years, he consulted with more than 200 colleges, universities, and technology companies worldwide. He maintained a 20-year consulting relationship with George Mason University, helping develop its distributed university model and supporting the creation of the Prince William Institute, now GMU’s Technology and Innovation Campus.

Dr. Norris has authored 22 books and monographs on higher education transformation, beginning with Transforming Higher Education: A Vision for Learning in the 21st Century (1995). In 2014, he received a lifetime service award from the Society for College and University Planning. During the COVID-19 pandemic, he co-authored Transforming for Turbulent Times (2022), outlining strategies for adapting to changes in the global economy, AI, and lifelong learning.

His latest work, Virtualization and AI Are Revolutionizing Planning (2023), explores how virtual collaboration tools and advanced AI are transforming planning processes in the Age of Acceleration
