January 2026
Greetings Legionnaires,
As we embark on a new year, it's an opportune moment to reflect on the exciting prospects ahead for Post 1799. We remain a robust and ever-strengthening battalion, proudly reporting a roll call of approximately 147 confirmed members, with nearly 200 patriots listed as part of our ranks.
Weekly Assembly at IHOP: The Heart of Post 1799
Our weekly gatherings continue to serve as the cornerstone of our camaraderie, taking place at IHOP in Gainesville every Thursday at 0930. Known affectionately as our "Hell or High Water IHOP" sessions, these meetings are critical to maintaining our strong esprit de corps, especially as we operate without a traditional post building. This venue has become our mess hall, where plans are hatched, and friendships are fortified. Let’s keep this tradition marching forward—come rain or shine, hell and high water
Youth Engagement and the Double Play Challenge
This January, we kicked off with a strong showing at the District 16 Oratorical Contest, where our representative from Battlefield High School, Alexander Stroud, secured an impressive second place. His participation marks a revival in our engagement with this pivotal event, last attended in 2013. Alex’s initiative in these arenas underscores our commitment to American Legion Pillar #4: Support Our Children & Youths.
Looking ahead, we aim to establish the "Post 1799 Double Play Challenge." This initiative will bridge the Oratorical Contest and the Boys State/Girls State programs, offering dual-track opportunities for high school students to engage continuously with the Legion’s mission. We are open to further suggestions for this program, including potential names and incentives such as certificates or scholarships for participants who rise to the challenge of multiple engagements per year.
Operational Updates and Event Briefing
Our operational theaters have been active across multiple fronts:
Sweats for Virginia Vets: Providing new sweatsuits to Virginia VA Medical hospitals for veteran members use. Again, we completed deliveries to three Virginia Veterans Hospitals.
Unmarked Veterans Graves Project: Providing research and support to ensure veterans in private cemeteries have proper veteran grave markers. We have expanded our efforts which include a second cemetery.
Disability Filing Initiative: Providing support through Post VSO to assist more veterans in claiming their rightful benefits.
Special Mention: Virginia Military Grand Band
Sadly, we approach the final curtain for the Virginia Military Grand Band concerts in Alexandria. These performances have been a highlight for many, especially our senior veterans who relish the stirring melodies of one of the nation's finest musical ensembles.
Readiness for Emergencies:
We are finalizing plans for a Veterans Emergency/Disaster Relief project, ensuring that Post 1799 is prepared to respond swiftly to any crisis.
