Eligibility Information for the American Legion

If you have served federal active duty in the United States Armed Forces on or after December 7, 1941, and have been honorably discharged or are still serving, you are eligible for membership in The American Legion!

Because eligibility dates remain open, all active duty members of the U.S. Armed Forces are eligible to join The American Legion at this time, until the date of the end of hostilities as determined by the government of the United States.

U.S. Merchant Marine eligible only from December 7, 1941 to December 31, 1946 (WWII).

The 2025 American Legion Membership Campaign and Year kicks off on 1 July 2025.  Current members will receive postcard reminders from National Headquarters to renew.  The quickest and most recommended way to renew your membership is to visit the renewal website by clicking the 'Renew Membership' button below. You will need your Membership ID# on your Membership Card and a credit card.  The 2025 membership fee is $45.00.  The National website has an easy option to "Pay Up For Life," including the fee calculator.  

You can also pay directly by sending a check ($45) to American Legion Post 1799, ATTN: Adjutant, P.O. Box 1799, Haymarket, Virginia 20168-1799.
